AUMED, a.s. Successfully Completes Project: “Development of a New Vaccine Against Staphylococcus aureus”
AUMED, a.s. announces the successful completion of an extensive research and development project (registration number CZ.01.01.01/01/22_002/0000585) aimed at developing an innovative vaccine against the dangerous bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. The result of the project is a preparation that represents hope in the fight against staphylococcal infections and the globally increasing resistance to antibiotics.
Staphylococcus aureus causes a wide range of diseases, from common skin infections to life-threatening invasive conditions such as sepsis (bacteremia), endocarditis, pneumonia, or severe secondary postoperative infections. It is particularly dangerous in intensive care units, in patients with implants, or in the case of MRSA strains. Due to its dramatically increasing resistance to antibiotics, the World Health Organization (WHO) has designated this bacterium a “priority pathogen” for which urgent investment in the development of new drugs is required.
One of the most effective solutions to this society-wide problem is prevention through vaccination. However, traditional approaches utilizing surface antigens (capsular conjugates or proteins) have proven ineffective. The AUMED research team therefore chose a completely innovative path. Our new vaccine does not use cellular antigens, cell wall proteins, or live microorganisms to induce an immune response. It is based on exogenous anatoxins (toxoids) as the main active pharmaceutical ingredient. This approach partially builds on the historical success of the Czech vaccine Polystafana, but the new technology now fully reflects the strictest current legislative requirements and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.
During four stages of systematic research—from strain selection and isolation procedures to purification and stability studies—we successfully developed the final preparation in both liquid and lyophilized forms. The tangible output of the project is the creation of a “Functional Sample” and, above all, the registration of a “Utility Model”. This was registered by the Industrial Property Office on October 27, 2025, under the number 38912. Given that this method has not yet been described anywhere in the global literature and represents an absolute worldwide novelty, a patent application has also been filed and the procedure is currently pending.
Development does not end with the successful completion of this project. Vaccination remains strategically the most advantageous path to suppressing these infections, and the commercial and medical potential of the new preparation is exceptionally high. In the coming period, AUMED will focus on the legislatively required processes for market launch, which include a wide range of preclinical tests, three-phase clinical trials, and the subsequent registration procedure. The achieved results thus significantly increase the technological know-how, global competitiveness, and professional reputation of our company.
